The annual Waste Reduction Week has arrived in Canada! This event is celebrating its 20th year of bringing heightened awareness around the circular economy.
Each day of the week is focused on appropriately recycling common materials that we all have. This is anything from food waste, textiles, e-waste and our favorite, plastics! The idea behind this week is not necessarily to purge, but to come up with creative ways to repurpose materials that we have to bring them to their fullest potential. While we’ll be participating on site all week, we are particularly looking forward to seeing all the success that come from Thursday’s plastic focused theme.
One of our code of ethics is to use waste plastics to make new products whenever possible. We have stood by this mission for over a decade, producing saleable products made of 100% recycled materials. We have made everything from lumber, reels, pavers, roofing, siding, and most recently a portable storage device for the sporting industry, the LOKR BOX.
We were recently speaking with a new employee about the ways that we actively reduce our carbon footprint at Omachron Plastics and one of the ways we do so is recycling all of the plastic that comes in to our facility. This is everything from our shavings, regrind, lunchroom recyclables, extrusion change over, even old DVD cases! It is important to all of us here to contribute to the circular economy in every way we can.
With these recycled materials, the Omachron Plastics molding and recycling process can take products and remanufacture them into new products at least 10 times, while maintaining at least 90% of their original strength and impact properties.
The reality is, the production of plastics is unlikely to cease. There are advantages to food preservation, medical supplies, and products that we use every day. With this in mind, we collectively need to find viable ways to reduce, reuse, and recycle these products. Our process at Omachron Plastics is energy efficient, produces no new waste, and can produce parts in virtually any size with recycled materials. We have successfully manufactured products with a mixture of post-consumer PET, HDPE, PVC, LDPE, PP, PS and other miscellaneous forms of plastic material.
Our goal for the circular economy is that municipalities, private businesses, and individuals have the ability to utilize this equipment and create a more sustainable and responsible business model. Sustainability and profitability are compatible concepts! Moving forward, we need corporations, individuals and groups to continue to advocate for change. More than that, we need allies, innovators, and advocates for change. Waste Reduction Week is a wonderful initiative for us all to participate in and share with our neighbors, workmates, and friends.
We have some exciting and sustainable projects on the go, and are looking forward to sharing them with you soon! To follow along with us on our journey to manufacture additional sustainable products made of recycled materials, follow us on YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn and subscribe to our blog.
